Some weeks ago I shot a small series of landscape photographs themed “Nightlife / when everybody sleeps”, while it was cold in the Netherlands, water was frozen. To emphasize the emptiness I shot the landscape series day for night, without any light sources and people in the frame. Day for night means you shoot during the day, often slightly underexposed, and during post production make it appear as if it were night.
By composing the photographs so they are clearly hiding something I want to provoke some discomfort. The cold moonlight that is never quite right reminds the viewer of classic cinema: Hitchcock, Scorsese, Polanski. Something is probably going to happen. Something that only the night may see.
