Elspeth Diederix has inspired me a lot since I saw her solo exhibition last summer in Oss. The room with photographic wallpaper showing studies and tries, some of which (but not all) resulted in a work that was also in the museum was most impressive. Of course one already knows this, the masterpieces do not come into being without preliminary work, it was refreshing to see the precise route of some nonetheless. Everybody (every artist) needs to find his or her own path, but it can be benificial to follow in someone elses footsteps for a while, in order to learn and appreciate. Me in Elspeth Diederix’s footsteps resulted in:
Addition (2023)
This post has been one of my more popular ones, even though it contained only one photograph. The same day that I shot it, I shot the ones below. Even though I judged them to be inferior then, they occupied a space in the back of my mind all these years. Today I felt sick and decided to dig up the photographs and list them for sale, for I could not muster the strength for anything more complicated. If you want, you can enjoy (one of) them in your home, by following the link to Nonstockphoto and buying them.
Inspired…
I liked Elspeth’s photograph of the birches with pink post-its a lot. This is an attempt inspired by that photograph, but with a different underlying theme (obviously) and, in the end, graphically very different as well.
Pre- Elspeth Diederix
Earlier, before I saw the works of Elspeth Diederix, I shot these mushrooms in the woods with cutlery, experimenting with ‘food photography’. It has kind of the same vibe to me.
My favourites
As mentioned, the birches with pink post-its, the ‘black bowl’ with egg in it (fourth photograph on this page), cloud (below, not on her website currently) and of course, her famous ‘Still life with milk’ that I made a remake of (not for sale, because it is such a blatant copy). Those are my favourite photographs by Elspeth Diederix. I recommend checking out more of her work.
